[edit] The Honour Roll

This Roll has been compiled over a three year period from a wide variety of sources.

Before compilation, three "databases" of local war casualties existed (the Honour Roll formerly at Northcote R.S.L., City of Darebin "Encyclopaedia" web site, and the Preston Cenotaph), none of which go anywhere documenting the true number of local men (and the one woman) who gave their lives in the service of country - in many cases, their adopted country (the two former lists are believed based on enlistment papers found at Northcote Town Hall.

The Cenotaph roll also contains many misspellings and incorrect initials, making several of the entries impossible to track down. There are several references to names that do not correspond to known casualties, is some cases not even recorded in residential directories of the time.

Other than geographical location, no hard and fast criteria have been imposed. Details have been included when the person is known to have been living in the district at the time of embarkation, nominated their next-of-kin as residents, are known to have been domiciled for a significant period, or in a few cases, known to have had close political, communal or sporting links.

The Preston Cenotaph in particular simply includes those "from the district", extending in several cases from Fitzroy to Yan Yean and many of the names that are listed are not included; there are also several errors in spelling of the family namess and in the initials shown.

[edit] The City of Darebin

The City of Darebin in the current form is a relatively new entity (although a Shire of Darebin was proclaimed in 1870, including Northcote, Preston and the Road Districts of Epping, Upper Plenty (or Morang) and Woodstock, Northcote and Preston being split off the following year to become the Shire of Jika Jika).

For the purpose of this Honour Roll, those districts covered by the Leader that lay within or overlapped the current boundaries of the City of Darebin are included, although some of these were not part of the City of Northcote or the Preston Shire in 1914.

Epping, Mill Park, Bundoora and Alphington are included, much of the latter at the time part of the Shire of Heidelberg, but now within Darebin. Addresses given for servicemen in the former three areas are usually so vague that they may or may not been within today's perimeters - in reality the number from these districts is very small and do not materially impact the study.

The Leader's reporting of war casualties also extended to Heidelberg, Ivanhoe and Whittlesea but these have not been included.

Probably the major inclusion is that of the Alphington area - the former Alphington ward of the City of Heidelberg came under the control of the City of Northcote in 1962, adding 2.2 square miles, 12,342 new residents, 2,614 dwellings (along with substantial numbers of shops, offices and factories) and landmarks in the Yarra Bend Park, the Fairfield Infectious Diseases Hospital and the Fairlea Women’s Prison. The area became the new South East Ward of the City Of Northcote.

[edit] Need More Information?

The details listed below show the serviceman's name, date of death, key address, and rank and unit at time of details. The full database includes embarkation details (vessel, port and date), Service Number, date of enlistment, marital status, religion, birthplace, occupation, next ok kin, place of death and burial, age at death, education, eye witness accounts of their demise, and extensive notes on the serviceman's military history, family and personal background. These have been compiled from snippets of official records, the details supplied by families in the "circulars", and contemporaray material at was published in either the Preston or Northcote Leader, and from healthy supply of local material on scribbled (and sometimes undecipherable) notes collected over many years taken from usually unacknowledged or forgotten sources and long since hidden away in a drawer or cupboard).

Serviceman's histories can be provided via email . Simply complete the request form at Bullants FC History Sample histories :
