Women of West Heidelberg

Women of West Heidelberg is a group of women from West Heidelberg who regularly come together to celebrate women and the contribution they make to their community.

The group started meeting after an International Women’s Day event in 2007. The women who attended this event expressed an interest in coming together on a regular basis to plan for future events and to bring women who live in West Heidelberg together and so that they may develop social connections and support women from diverse backgrounds. The group provides a safe and social place where women can be empowered by taking on leadership roles in the community and sharing stories of their life experiences.

The main objectives of the Women of West Heidelberg group are:

*Empower women in the community to take leadership roles within the community;

*Fundraise for events and opportunities that support community interests such as the Shilling Wall fund (Queen Victoria Women’s Centre);

*Celebrate International Women’s Day annually in West Heidelberg through events organised by local women;

*Give an opportunity for isolated and housebound women to enjoy social outings such as International Women’s Day luncheon’s and bus outings;

*Encourage enthusiasm and involvement of local residents to hold future events for women and to get involved on an ongoing basis in the Women of West Heidelberg project;

*Share and document women’s stories and celebrate the contribution women make to the community and;

*Create a safe, secure and inclusive environment where women of all ages and backgrounds can come together on equal terms
