The rainbow lorikeet (Trichoglossus haematodus) is found throughout eastern Australia, from Cape York to Tasmania and from Kangaroo Island to Eyre Peninsula. It has also been introduced into to Western Australia. The rainbow lorikeet is also found through New Guinea and South Eastern Pacific Islands.
The rainbow lorikeet is common in Darebin and can be seen frequently in the Darebin Parklands. They grow to between 25 and 30cm and have a high pitched screech when flying. Their main diet comprises of pollen and nectar.
The City of Darebin adopted the rainbow lorikeet as its logo after council amalgamations in 1994. The lorikeet reflects Darebin’s heritage, parklands and cultural diversity. It also represents Darebin’s commitment to the environment and the ribbon line contours of the logo suggests movement and celebration.
