Darebin Community and Kite Festival

The Darebin Community and Kite Festival is an annual event held at Edwardes Lake and All Nations Park on a rotating basis. The first Darebin Festival was held in 1994 to celebrate the creation of the City of Darebin after the amalgamation of the former cities of Northcote and Preston.

The following year the Annual Festival of Kites made its debut at Bundoora Park, sponsored by the North Eastern Melbourne Chinese Association.

Both festivals proved popular both with Darebin residents and visitors from outside the city. In 2006 it was decided to combine the two festivals, creating the Darebin Community and Kite Festival, one of the highlights of the Darebin social calendar.

The festival is usually held at All Nations Park in early March. Activities have included:

  • Kite making and flying
  • La Trobe University Sustainable Living Village
  • Youth Fest
  • Dance workshops
  • Kidzone
