I grew up in Glenroy. The suburb and the community seemed to be growing with me.
The pocket of new housing where we lived was filled with lots of children similar in age. In hindsight, we had lots of freedom to wander about. As long as we were home for lunch or tea, or before dark(depending on Mum’s instructions) we could go down to the creek, ride our bikes around the neighbourhood, play footy on the road or just visit each others’ back yards.
Most of the adult neighbours were addressed as Aunty or Uncle. Except a few older residents who were always know as Mr or Mrs.
The older boys often played a game of cops and robbers, the characters based on the infamous escape of Ryan and Walker from Pentridge Prison.
We played skippy, elastics, street cricket, kick to kick football and rode bikes and skateboards.
