Plenty Craft Group

The Plenty Craft Group was started after a meeting was called by Mrs. Kath Heard in early 1983, and originally called the Plenty Art and Craft Group.

Kath had grandchildren attending the Plenty Primary School at the time and her own children had also attended the school.

For the first few years we met at Kath’s home in Heard Avenue, Plenty and held our first Art and Craft Show in her garden in 1983. From 1985 to 1991 we met at the Plenty Hall with the artists at one end of the Hall and the crafters at the other. We met on a Wednesday afternoon between 1-30 and 3-30pm and our children all walked down to the Hall after school. At that time we had about 20 members.

In 1992 the craft group met at the School in an unused portable and the artists met for a short time at Kath’s studio. The Plenty Primary School closed in 1993 and the Craft Group have been meeting at the Plenty Fire Station every Wednesday since then.

We held very successful Art and Craft Shows in the Plenty Hall in 1984, ’85 and ’86 which also included other local artists.

In 1985 the Art and Craft Group won First Prize for the best display at the Diamond Creek Town Fair.

For many years we were very fortunate to have Betty Kemp as a member and teacher. Betty was a very accomplished textile artist and taught those who wanted to learn very different and interesting types of craft and embroidery technics. Betty passed away in 2013 and her talents are very sadly missed.

The Craft Group are still meeting at the Fire Station every Wednesday of school terms between 1-30 and 3-30pm for a cost of $2. We are now down to about 7 members and we all just come along with our current projects and enjoy each other’s company and advice.

New members would be most welcome.
