Friends of Darrabi Aboriginal Native Food Garden

Friends of Darrabi are a volunteer group of parents and others who are working with Hurstbridge Primary School and the local community to:

*help every child at Hurstbridge to put in and look after their plant

*maintain and grow the Darrabi Native Food & Reconciliation Garden

*conserve and rehabilitate the surrounding native bushland

*protect and improve the health of the Diamond Creek

*educate the children and visitors about Australia’s native biodiversity

What do we do?

Friends of Darrabi aim to foster awareness of and respect for our local native bushland resources, and assist Nillumbik Shire in the repair, care, protection and conservation of the bushland area behind the school.

We liaise with Nillumbik Council, Hurstbridge Primary School, Melbourne Water, Nillumbik Reconciliation Group, and Greening Australia, on:

*maintenance of the garden plants and landscape of the Resources Trail

*plantings with the children of Hurstbridge Primary School

*removal of environmental weeds and rubbish

*assisting Greening Australia with biodiversity curriculum in the school

*providing species information, education, and interpretive walks

*respecting and involving the Wurundjeri Traditional owners

Gatherings & Events 

*Monthly on-site meetings: 1st Sunday of the month 10am–12.30 for a  social working bee and family picnic. Bring your gardening gloves and safe footwear and enjoy being out with nature.   Melway ref: 263 – A7 Ferguson’s Paddock (behind the school)

*Outings, trips and environmental information: learn about our local environment, and what events are on in Nillumbik, or where to buy native plants and bush foods. Join in a social, botanical or educational outings

*Prep Plantings with the children occur each May (in Reconciliation Week)

*Bush food sales: Small stocks of bushfood products are available from time to time as a fundraising activity for various projects.
