Briar Hill

Briar Hill, situated in the City of Banyule was established in the early 1920s and named because it was a hill of briars. The area then mainly consisted of weekend shanties owned by people from inner suburbs such as Northcote and Collingwood. A local progress association was established in the early 1920s and a result a post office was opened in May 1924. The Local State School was established in 1927. The 2006 Census indicated the area’s population as 3099. Sherbourne Primary School is located in Briar Hill.

  1. The town was named Briar Hill because of the prevalence of the Briar Rose that grew in the vicinity .
