The Coburg Cowboys started by George, Bill and Pompey Hyde around 1910. Several dozen local cowboys perfected roping, buck jumping and acrobatic feats on horseback to such a degree that they were banned from the horse-breaking competitions of travelling side-shows. The Coburg Cowboys were prominent in fund-raising carnivals all over Melbourne during the war, performing trick riding and mock battles with ‘Indians’.
