My name is Ann Marie Johnson and I have just relocated from the Sunshine Coast, Queensland where I have lived for the past 10 years.
My husband and I returned to Victoria in November 2012 and have just moved into our new home in Doreen.
I have been teaching genealogy for the past 10 years and also help people who need to research their family tree and who would like to build a family tree.
Before I retired from Victoria Police I was always yearning to do my family tree but working full time never really gave me the chance to learn. However, when I did retire up to the Sunshine Coast in December 2002 I found a Genealogy Research Centre where I was taught everything I know.
After a year the English lady who taught me asked me to take her place as she was re-locating to Harvey Bay and would not be able to carry on her work. I was very pleased to know that she was of the opinion that I was ready for such a roll and I was also somewhat proud to be given the chance to help other people like others. had helped me.
When I was researching the maternal side of my family I had the surname Pierpont in my family. What a surprise when I discovered that the last hangman in England was Albert Pierpont, was a relative of mine. He undertook the occupation and followed in his father’s and his grand fathers footsteps.
This was my skeleton in the cupboard and it was a very exciting find.
I have gone back to 1501 with my family tree and I consider myself lucky to have got back so far. I thoroughly enjoy researching and putting everything together.
I recently researched and built a family tree for a friend in Tasmania, she came from the same part of the UK as I did. When I was doing her research I noticed she had the surname Leyland on both paternal and maternal sides of her family.
I also have this name on my maternal family tree as well so I decided that I would compare the Leyland’s to see if I had any of her people in my tree.
To my utter surprise I found about three Leyland’s in both trees. When I looked the names I found that one of my friends relatives married a Leyland girl and one of my relatives married her sister. That meant that the Leyland girls father and mother were my friends 6th Great Grand parents and they were also my 6th grand parents too.
This work is extremely rewarding and I am totally addicted.
