The Heidelberg to Eltham railway extension was opened on 5th June 1902 after the Sandridge (Port Melbourne) station, a wooden & corrugated iron building was transported to Greensborough to serve as its first ticket office. The original proposed rail line did not include Greensborough however the local Progress Association lobbied hard to change the route which put the town on the map.
From then on the district became a popular destination for church groups, walking clubs, school outings and everyday picnickers over the following years many of whom being so impressed with its bush like environment they made Greensborough their home.
