Moreland Remembers – Women and the War

The ‘Moreland Remembers’ exhibition documents the monumental efforts of Australian women during World War I. During this time, Women played the role of family and community leaders, displaying courage and strength while suffering with the emotional burdens of missing their loved ones and the grief of losing husbands and sons to the War.

Women at home took up roles in previously male dominated industries including farming, manufacturing and banking and many were integral to political campaigns and fundraisers of the time. They also volunteered their time and efforts to create comfort parcels for overseas soldiers, knitting socks, cooking food and writing letters of support. Thousands of Australian women served overseas as aid workers, nurses, ward assistants and masseuses for the Red Cross and Australian Nursing Army Service.
