Peck’s dam Montmorency

This man-made dam, located between Napier Crescent and Pedersen Way, was built in the early 1900’s to service the surrounding farmland. It came to be named after the Peck family who lived in an adobe house next to the dam from the 1950’s until the 1970’s.

The dam is about three quarters the size of a football field and about 8 metres deep when full. It is surrounded by largely native vegetation thus creating a bush setting in the heart of suburbia. Over the years it has been a popular recreation spot, especially for local children. It has been used for activities such as swimming, fishing, yabbying, and boating. There is usually at least one rope swing dangling from trees on its banks from which children are able to launch themselves into the water.

In its early days it was also favourite painting place for Heidelberg School artist, Walter Withers who lived nearby.  The Burstall family used to have picnics there.

As a result of the drought and nearby drainage construction in 2010 the dam dried out completely for the first time.
